6G: The Sixth Generation

6G remains largely theoretical but promises 1 Tbps peak data rates, sub-microsecond latency, terahertz spectrum (100 GHz-10 THz), AI-native networking, and integration with satellite networks for truly global coverage.

The 6G Vision

While 5G networks are still being deployed globally, researchers and standards bodies are already envisioning 6G. The targets are ambitious: theoretical peak data rates of 1 terabit per second (Tbps), latency under 100 microseconds, and spectrum extending into the terahertz (THz) range from 100 GHz to 10 THz.

Key Technologies

  • Terahertz Communication: 100 GHz - 10 THz spectrum
  • AI-Native Network: AI/ML integrated into all layers
  • Integrated Sensing: Radar-like capabilities in base stations
  • Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS): Smart reflecting surfaces
  • Visible Light Communication: Light-based data transmission
  • Satellite Integration: NTN (Non-Terrestrial Networks)

Terahertz Spectrum

6G research heavily focuses on terahertz (THz) frequencies above 100 GHz. While these offer massive bandwidth, significant challenges remain: propagation loss, atmospheric absorption, and the need for entirely new semiconductor technologies. Researchers have demonstrated THz links at 300 GHz and beyond in laboratory conditions.

AI-Native Architecture

Unlike 5G which added AI as an afterthought, 6G is being designed with AI/ML at its core. The network itself will be capable of self-optimization, predictive resource allocation, and native support for distributed learning. This could enable truly autonomous network management.

Global Race

Nations view 6G as strategically important. China's Huawei, ZTE, and research institutions are heavily invested. The US has the Next G Alliance. Europe has the Hexa-X project. Samsung, Nokia, and Ericsson lead vendor research. Standardization is expected to begin around 2025, with commercial deployments projected for 2030.
